Vera Cole Peterson Washington, was born July 19, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois. She was born to the late Jeremiah and Rachell Cole, one of four children. Vera departed this life on December 27, 2018, at her home. Vera was a devoted
daughter, loving mother, caring and supportive sister, and was a force of positive energy, truly modeling a non-judgmental presence to all she came in contact with.
She attended Foster Elementary, Haven Middle School, and graduated from Evanston township High School in Evanston, Ilinois. Vera was employed at Northwestern University for more than twenty five years, and was recently a Student
Finance Counselor until retirement. She joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church at an early age, then became a member of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church, where she was passionately dedicated toward her mission to answer what she considered
her calling to God’s request to help those in need through Church Ministry. She became a Choir Member, Steward, Trustee, Missionary, Tape Ministry, Licensed Evangelist, Sunday School Leader, Prayer and Fasting Ministry, Class
Leader, and Certified Food Handler in the soup kitchen ministry.
After retirement she continued as a volunteer in the church office, and really enjoy her work as a food handler in the soup kitchen. Many of her community efforts were the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Foster Center Senior Club, African American Genealogy Group, and with time left over, enjoyed exercising at Curves. She was married to Kyle Peterson, Sr, from that union was born two sons, Kyle Jr. and Kevin Peterson. She was preceded in death by her loving husband George Washington.
Vera leaves to cherish her memory two devoted sons Kyle Jr, and Kevin, two brothers Jerome (Donna) and Vincent (Jim), Aunt Leahanna Lawhorne, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, two great-great nephews, a host of cousins, and other relatives, as well as many, many dear friends.
