George Ernest Dotson, affectionately known to some as "The Unofficial Mayor," or "Boo" passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 77. He was the only child of the late Kathryn Bell Dotson and George William Dotson. George was a lifelong pillar of the Evanston community, dedicating his life to serving others, particularly the youth of Evanston, Illinois.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, on February 19, 1947, George moved to Evanston during early childhood. He attended Foster Elementary School and Skiles Middle School and was a proud alumnus of Evanston Township High School.
George furthered his education at Kendall College, continuing his commitment to personal growth and learning.
George built a remarkable career spanning over 40 years with the City of Evanston Recreation Department, leaving an indelible mark on countless lives. Whether you visited the Robert Crown Community Center, Fleetwood-Jordain, Chandler Community Center or Evanston Township High School, George's presence was a constant. After retirement, George worked for Girls Hope Boys Hope and Wilmette School District where he worked up until his death. From local barbershops to community hubs like Hecky's BBQ, George was more than a familiar face—he was a friend, mentor, and guide.
His passion for service extended far beyond his professional life. George dedicated decades to empowering youth and fostering community through numerous organizations. He was a committed member of the FAAM organization, served on the Family Focus board, and held leadership positions as president and vice president of The Chessman of the North Shore. George also made a profound impact as a supervisor of Boys Hope Girls Hope of Illinois and as a youth mentor through Project Soar.
In 1969, George married the love of his life, Della Martin, with whom he shared
55 wonderful years. Together, they raised two children, Danielle and George
Salah (deceased). He is survived by his devoted wife, Della; his daughter,
Danielle; his cousins, Kay Mack of New Jersey, Obie Reed, Philip Reed, Wayne
Reed, Alicia Reed, Paul Reed, Thomas Reed and Leslie Reed of Chicago,
In-laws Denise Martin, Barbara Hare, Edmund Martin Sr, Nancy and John
Fuller, nieces Krissie Harris and Nichole Hare, nephews Robert Hare
(TinaMaria), Joe Martin Jr, Edmund Martin Jr and Justin Martin, Godsons
Micheal A and Marcellus Johnson of Evanston, and a host of neighbors,
mentees, family, and friends who celebrate his memory and honor his legacy.
George's life was a testament to the power of community, service, and love. His
unwavering dedication to Evanston and its youth leaves a legacy that will be
cherished for generations.
