Hilda Williams Washington was born in Honduras on September 29, 1941 to Samuel and Maud (Brooks) Mullings. Early in her life, Hilda made a courageous journey from La Ceiba to fulfill her dream of building a lasting legacy in America. Her strength, grace, and determination guided every step of the way. She married William Gary Washington, Sr., a World War II veteran, and together they raised a family in Evanston, Illinois.
A devout Christian, Hilda was a dedicated member of The Salvation Army, Evanston Corps, where she served for decades with unwavering faith and great humility. Hilda contributed a significant amount of time to serving her community through the Church. She was well-versed in the Word of God and could recite several passages of scripture by memory. Hilda found great comfort in her favorite passage, Psalm 23, which she cherished throughout her entire life.
Hilda worked on Chicago’s Northshore, where she had a career in household management and was admired for her diligence, integrity, and care. She also embraced her entrepreneurial spirit and thrived as a representative for companies such as Avon. Hilda’s strong work ethic and dedication earned the trust and respect of everyone she encountered.
Outside of her professional life, Hilda was a woman of many gifts and passions. Hilda’s creativity flourished in gardening and sewing. She thoroughly enjoyed cooking and baking. Beyond her accomplishments and skills, however, it was Hilda’s heart that made her unforgettable. Hilda had a heart of gold and uplifted everyone around her. She was always available to offer a helping hand or words of wisdom to those in need. She was loving, kind, and generous beyond measure. Her compassion touched so many who were fortunate to know her.
Hilda’s beautiful legacy continues through her beloved children: David, Edwin (Leslie), William Jr., and Robert Michael; and more than 20 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a loving tia-abuela to her brothers’ families, and a mother figure to Nepthali (Shirley) and Wilfred, and shares her legacy through them as well. Hilda is also survived by a host of cherished family relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, and most recently, her brother Samuel Alberto Mullings.
Although her earthly journey has ended, Hilda’s radiant light continues to shine. She will be laid to rest alongside her husband at the family’s designated resting place in Memorial Park.
