Larry Nathaniel Cowans Sr., after courageously facing several health challenges in recent years, was peacefully called home on March 5, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on February 17, 1955, to James Lee Cowans Sr. and Minnie B. Buchanan, who both preceded him in death. Larry’s life began in Chicago, Illinois, before he later moved to Lexington, Mississippi in 1961. He attended Ambrose from 1st through 6th grade, then continued at Lexington Attendance Center for 7th through 12th grade, graduating in 1973. It was in both places that his roots shaped the strength, humor, and resilience that defined him. Larry built a life between Lexington and Chicago, carrying both communities in his heart while remaining a faithful member of Springhill Church and choir in Lexington, Mississippi.
Larry spent more than 35 years in the printing industry, dedicating the majority of his career to General Business Forms in Skokie, Illinois, where he worked as a collator operator and served as a dependable shift lead. In 2002, he returned to Mississippi and continued his work in printing at Jackson Business Forms until his retirement. Known for his reliability, steady leadership, and strong work ethic, Larry earned the respect of coworkers and friends across decades.
Outside of work, Larry lived with a passion that inspired everyone around him. Fitness was his second calling. Larry motivated coworkers, friends, and even his kids’ friends to take care of their bodies. He once tried out for the hit TV show American Gladiators, a testament to his drive and playful spirit. Also, Larry loved working on cars, tackling home repairs, and riding motorcycles. His beloved ’88, 5.0 Ford Mustang was more than a car, it was part of his identity.
In May of 1978, Larry married Nancy Talbert, and together they built a blended family rooted in shared responsibility with Jason, Shawn, Jamillah, and Larry Jr. (J.R.). They created a life full of lessons and unforgettable memories. Larry’s smile, his humor, and his unmistakable “heheheheh” laugh became trademarks of his presence.
Larry’s family will forever remember his favorite breakfast of coffee, sausage, biscuits, cheese toast, and rice, a simple ritual that captured his structure and consistency. He was known for his deep knowledge of history, his love of conversation on the subject, and always eager to share stories and lessons. Larry’s daily text message, “Good Morning Family, I Love You’ll,” will be deeply missed, having become a cherished tradition and a reminder of his steady love and connection.
Larry leaves behind his brother, James Lee Cowans Jr (Shirley), and his bonus brother, Rudy Morris (Faye), along with four children: Jason (Shay), Shawn (Iman), Jamillah (Charles), and J.R. (Gaby). He is also survived by ten grandchildren: Jason (Bubba), Jordan, Kayla, Justin, Jaylen (preceded in death), Kai, Jenai, Loghan, Chase, Lawson, and Cassius. Together, they represent a growing legacy of hard work, loyalty, humor, and heart. Larry touched lives through his actions, his encouragement, and his presence. His story lives on in the family he raised, the people he inspired, and a large extended family of dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will continue to honor his legacy through the love he shared and the countless moments that now form the memories his loved ones will carry forward.
A very special thank you to Larry’s various care team members that supported and cheered him on over the years.
