Mildred was the first born child to the late LeRoy Austin and Mildred "Pinkie" Austin on September 9, 1945 in Evanston, IL. She was named Mildred after her mother and Lee after her father. Mildred was in a Children's Beauty Pageant at the age of three and won first place. Her mother made her outfit and Mildred always had extremely long beautiful hair.
Mildred matriculated through the Evanston School system attending Central, and Dewey Schools; Skiles Junior High School (was in the first graduating class of what is now known as Martin L King, Jr. Lab School). She graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1963 and attended Wright Junior College, majoring in Business Administration. Mildred also attended Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary as a special student. At an early age, Mildred attended Sunday School at Mount Zion Baptist Church. She started attending Sunday School at Second Baptist Church and at the age of 14 she accepted Christ and joined Second Baptist where she was a member for 62 years. Mildred was a member of Young, Gifted and Black Youth Choir, the Gospel Chorus and the Senior Choir. She attended and taught Bible Study, and helped tutor students.
Mildred loved God, family and close friends. She attended church faithfully until her health failed in 1999. She was married to William B. Moore, Sr. from 1967 through 1980. Mildred was an awesome seamstress, like her mother, often making her own clothes; and she enjoyed music, sports. She was employed at Marshall Fields in Old Orchard and was the first African American Manager over Millinery jSewing Notions. Mildred also worked at Wilmette Bank in Wilmette, IL and helped to start and supervise their Student Loan Department. She was a General Office Administrative at Thompson Publishing Co., in Skokie, IL until her health failed.
Mildred is survived by her daughter, Catherine H. Contereas, Jacksonville, FL; sons, William R. Moore, Dallas, TX and Michael L. (Sue Ann) Moore, San Jose, CA; grandchildren: Alvin Smith, Chenel, Miguel (Hawaii) and Timothy Contreras, Jackson, FL, Courtine, Cierra, and Corey Moore, Dallas, TX and Cassidy Moore, San Jose, CA; sister Jean George, Skokie, IL; • brother, Ray "Peter" Austin, Evanston, IL; nephews, Marques D. Austin, Chicago, IL, and Maurice (Nancy) George, Skokie, IL; nieces, Letita Sanders, Maywood, IL, and Natalie Copper Evanston, IL, and a host of other family members and friends.
