Fred A. Smith was born in Ashville, NC on May 21,1940 to Eloise (Belton) Smith and Henry James (Hump) Smith. He attended Hill Street School and then Stephens-Lee High School. Fred was very proud of his successful high school football career. The Stephens-Lee Bears won the Negro Crown title. Fred was a fullback and received a full ride scholarship to Shaw University.
In September of 1966 Fred moved to Evanston, IL. Later that same year his wife Wilma (Burgin) Smith joined him. He has several jobs then in 1969 he began working for the City of Evanston - Sanitation Dept. Fred retired from the City as a Supervisor in 1998. During that time Fred started his own Janitorial Service with his then, two kids, Craig and Yevette, in 1974, called Smith Maintenance. After his retirement from the City Fred and Wilma worked together full time for Smith Maintenance.
In 2013 Fred has brain surgery that prevented him from working, as he was in a wheelchair. Fred focused on the activities of his grandchildren such as sports, track and volleyball.
Fred is survived by his wife Wilma, their three children, Craig Smith, Monica "Yvette" Daniels, Rodric Smith; and grandchildren. In North Carolina , his children; Vanessa, Clayton, Ronald Eddings, Fred Clayton, Eric Eddings, Derrick Eddings, Tijuna (Clayton) Green, Steve Eddings, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, two sisters Bessie Lewis and Elaine Peterson. He is proceeded in death by his mother and father, brothers; Henry James Smith and Walter Smith.
Fred will truly be missed by family, friends, neighbors, co-workers from the Cith of Evanston, football staff from ETHS. His cheerfulness and stories brought smiles to many and touched many hearts.
