Hugh Maxwell Bruce was born on August 5, 1939 in Belize City to Jim Bruce and Myrtle Murphy Bruce.
His father, a successful Jamaican building contractor, relocated to Belize to start a new life on the Central American mainland.
As a young student, Hugh Maxwell attended St. John's Anglican School in Belize City.
He sought the added security of Government employment and his intellect and astute demeanor on the job advanced him quickly as a postal supervisor at the Belize City Post Office.
In his spare time, Hugh Maxwell was a sportsman and a gifted soccer player. Eventually, he took on a new assignment as referee officiating at national soccer competitions regularly at the iconic MCC Grounds on the Barracks. Hugh Maxwell was also an accomplished vocalist known for his deep male baritone voice. When evangelist Billy Graham visited Belize he performed as a member of the Belize Choral Society.
Hugh Maxwell moved to Chicago in 1988. There he met his wife Helen Moore with whom he enjoyed 32 beautiful years of marriage.
In his advancing senior years, he worked at the Evanston YMCA for 22 years. One of his favorite hobbies was cutting new sets of keys. Not only did he welcome the thrill of opening new doors but he established new and lasting friendships wherever life's journey took him.
He died on November 20, 2023. Please keep the family in your prayers.
