James Thomas Mines Jr., affectionally known as” Jimmy,” was born September 1, 1962 in Evanston, Il to Melvinia Levonia Peebles and James Thomas Mines Sr.
He is a product of the Evanston school system and graduate of University of Illinois majoring in Psychology, Political Science, and International Relations. Jimmy enlisted in the United States Navy in 1985 and received 2 Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, as well as a Battle Efficiency Ribbon. He also received a Letter of Commendations from his Commanding Officer and was honorably discharged in 1992.
In contrast to his academia and service, Jimmy loved to dance and enjoyed music. He took up playing the guitar and bass and wrote poetry and short stories. He worked as a writer and editor for the Evanston Sentinel Newspaper. But most of all he was a friend and confidant.
Jimmy was married to his college sweetheart Marla Koerner and from their union they were blessed with daughter, Carissa Ann Mines Koerner and beloved grandson Duke Koerner.
Early Tuesday morning on April 13, 2021, Jimmy passed. He was preceded in death by his mom, dad and sister Dorothy Bond. Jimmy leaves to cherish his wisdom and memory with daughter Carissa, grandson Duke, brother Robert Jackson, sisters Myrna Walker, Karen Taylor, Darlene Peebles along with many nieces, nephews and loved ones.
