Leonard was born on February 6, 1940, in Castleton, St. Mary, Jamaica. He was the 7th out of 8 children born to Theresa Agatha Simms and Uriel Augustus Barrett. Leonard earned the nickname "Duck" growing up due to his knock-knees.

Many describe his personality to be very fun, loving, and caring. His journey to the United States came in October of 1968. Using the knowledge and training taught to him by his father, he chose to pursue a profession in building furniture. He later transitioned to furniture polishing falling in love with the different hues made within wood. Just seven years after migrating to the U.S., Leonard became his own boss owning a furniture repair company called Leonard's Furniture Repair Services.

Valuing the importance of family, Leonard helped his 7 brothers and sisters along with their children migrate to the United States to start their journey in life. Family members looked up to him as the patriarch. His dream and goal of coming to the United States to START A BETTER LIFE for himself and his family was fulfilled and now two generations later, Leonard has created a dynasty of over 300 family members. Living in Chicago since leaving Jamaica, he became an avid fan of the Chicago White Sox, the Chicago Bears and reading the Chicago Tribune newspaper. His favorite colors were black, white, and gray but that didn't stop him from rocking a bright yellow or green color suit. His favorite foods were Stew Peas, Chicken Soup, Fried Dumplings, Corn Beef, and Cabbage and Oatmeal Porridge and Fried Dumplings.

His favorite Past-times were cooking his favorite meals, and he would always say "Eating a little bit of something you love, would not kill you."

Leonard tested his luck daily making the walk down to the corner store to get his lottery ticket, no matter how tired. He spent most of his day drinking coffee all day long and making phone calls giving his best advice, positive words and heart filled laughs to us daily. Leonard's memory was amazing to the fact that he never saved peoples' names with the numbers in his cell phone, but instead dialed from his from memory.
