Mr. Samuel Jones, Sr. Obituary

Samuel Jones Sr., was born March 25, 1930 in Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. He was the ninth born of ten children to William Henry David Jones and Emma Jessie Holmes Jones who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his nine brothers and sisters.
 

Samuel was raised in Evanston and attended the elementary schools and Evanston Township High School. He decided to enlist in the United States Army Air Force in 1947. He was able to obtain his high school diploma while serving in the Army Air Force in 1950. Samuel received an honorable discharge.
 

On New Year's Eve in 1960, he was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of his life, Rita Jean Walker who also preceded him in death. Together they celebrated 54 wonderful years of marriage and from this union, four children were born, Scott, Keith, Samuel Jr., and Crystal.

Samuel joined Second Baptist Church in 1973 under the leadership of the late Reverend Dr. Hycel B. Taylor. In his spare time, he loved bowling and joined the Evanston Ten Pinners where he was an avid bowler for 30 years and was also a bowling coach for Mike's Jr. Bowlers. He joined the VFW under the leadership of Alan "Bo" Price for Snell Post 7186. He was a black belt in Tae Kwon-Do under the leadership of Sensei Mosley at Foster (Fleetwood-Jourdain) Community Center in Evanston  Samuel was an avid swimmer and became a lifeguard at the Emerson Street YMCA. Samuel was also a skilled carpenter for 47 years and retired in 1993.
 

Samuel was loved by many and respected by all. A man of not many words, but he would always greet you with a smile. Samuel accumulated many nicknames over the years Mr. Sam, Mr. Jones, Unckie Sam, Papa Sam and Papa Dopa.
Preceded in death by siblings: Phoebe Lee Jones Khan, Mattie Lue Jones Stanford, William H. Jones, Jr., Jefferson David Jones, Juliette Jones Morris, Dolores Jones Ingram Matthews, David Jones, Martha Jones Aikens, and Jessie Jones and son, Scott Allen Jones.

 

Samuel leaves to cherish his memory, three children, Keith (June) of Paducah, Kentucky, Samuel Jr. (Sherri) of Sauk Village, Illinois and Crystal (James) Starks of Evanston, Illinois; Eleven grandchildren, Shereé Williams, Keith, Jr (Tasha), Samuel Ill (Patrice), Tameka (Jarrid) Thompkins, Tramelle (Steve) Williams, Stephen (Michaela), Theo Jones. Michelle Thomas, Samantha (Edward) Neil, Tevin Jones, and Michael Thomas, Jr.; twenty three great grandchildren; two sister in laws, Eula Jones and Charlene Jones; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of many, many friends; and a very special dog Coco. Please keep the family in your prayers.
