Mrs. Betty Johnson Obituary

Betty Lee Johnson was born on January 1, 1937, and departed this life on February 3, 2024. She was the daughter of the late Luther Smith and Martha W. Curenton of Greenwood, South Carolina. Betty accepted Christ at an earlier age of her life, becoming baptized at Mars Hill Baptist Church in Hodges, South Carolina. She was dedicated to a life of servitude and always led by faith.

Betty united in marriage with Richard Floyd Johnson and to this union nine children were born, Vivian, Thomas (Deceased), Deborah, Bruce, Floyd, Curtis, Michael, Sheila and Richard E. (Deceased).

Betty and Richard Floyd relocated to Evanston in the early 1960s and later found a family church at Ebenezer AME. Betty became a member of Ebenezer AME church and joined the Grant Missionary Society, the Sallyettes and was a Stewardess. She was affectionately known as ‘Ma Betty’ and enriched the lives of others with being a Domestic worker, while still nourishing and supporting her family. Betty loved gospel music, church, jigsaw puzzles, sewing, family gatherings, and providing a good home cooked meal. She was the ultimate mom.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Richard Floyd Johnson, her sons Thomas Johnson and Richard E. Johnson, and her siblings John Wesley Waldrup, James Waldrup, June Waldrup and Johnnie Mae Mattison.

Betty leaves to cherish her loving memory; four sons: Bruce (Adriane), Floyd, Curtis (Robin) and Michael (Paula), three daughters: Vivian McFarland, Deborah Johnson, and Sheila Livingston (Terry), one sister: Lenora Payne (Chester), Asheville, North Carolina, one brother: Cater Curenton, Evanston, Illinois, and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and numerous relatives and friends. Please keep the family in your prayers.
