On September 20, 1942, the world was blessed with a bright-eyed baby girl. Daphne May Clayton, born as Daphne Bonner, daughter of the late Louise Robinson and Uriah Bonner. She was born in Manchester, Jamaica, where her life was established. Daphne migrated to Chicago, IL, determined to create a better future for her daughters in the Rogers Park community. This quiet soul was no stranger to hard work and was dedicated to doing what she could for her family. Daphne was strong-willed and loved her children. She showed her love not in words but in her unique way. Daphne was affectionately called 'Mommae' by her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren. Her laughter was contagious, genuine, and came from deep down; she laughed with her entire face.
Daphne had a heart of gold and was a great cook. She was generous and had a plate and a smile for anyone visiting. She made the best sweet potato pudding, brown stew chicken, and cornmeal porridge you ever tasted with no shortage of sweet spices and sweet milk that left you wanting more. Mommae loved all genres of music, especially reggae. She loved to tap her feet to the music even though she may not have been the best dancer. She enjoyed her freedom, and being in a nursing facility ran counter to her personality, and this free spirit was determined to escape; till they found an alternate way to calm her down. Mommae humorously reminded us that she was an escape artist and would continue to try to run away again.
Mommae's antics were entertaining and would leave you with a smile. Although her final curtain call came on June 6th, 2021, we will sport a forever smile in memory of her performances. She is survived by her husband Baron Clayton and her seven daughters: Joan, Jacqueline, Dianna, Michelle, Reba, Carlene (Victor), and Priscilla. Eleven grandchildren: Avon Jr., Renee, Sabrina, Tariq, Brianna, AJ, Darian, Julian, Antoinette, Cheyenne, and Peyton; Four great-grandchildren: Stephon, Amerie, Sheadon, Elizabeth. The Bonner siblings: Audrey, Keith (aka LOllis), Shirley, Bobby, Eric, and Kenneth preceded her in death. The Robinson sib- lings: Norma, Lena, Granville 'aka' Bimmy, Raphael, Claudette, Roma, Janet, and Blanch. A host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and other relatives who will miss her please keep the family in your prayers.
