Mrs. Janie Johnson Obituary

Janie M. Johnson (84) was born on February 22, 1939, in Greenville, South Carolina. Janie was the oldest of eight children born to the late Carl and Alice Carson. Janie passed away peacefully at home surrounded by The Holy Spirit on December 15, 2023.

Janie received her limited education in the Greenville SC school system. She started late because, until her younger brother got old enough, there was nobody to walk to school with. Therefore, by the age of fifteen, Janie had only made it to the 7th grade. Around that time, Janie (with the late J.B. Bruton) gave birth to her first child Pecola. Around the age of 19, Janie left her southern life with only a few dollars and the clothes on her back and moved to New York City. At the insistence of family, she reluctantly left Pecola with her Aunt Pearl.

Before long, Janie met and shared life with the late John "Popsie" Dorsey, including his children, Deborah Ann, Chuck and the late Johnny Dorsey (Phila.) Together Janie and Popsie had three children: Melvin "Melvo", Benny, and Jeffrey, Sr. Some time later Janie met and married the late Leroy "Skip" Jackson.

Through their union, Janie and Skip had two children: Sharlene and Julia. Janie moved back and forth between New York and Evanston, before finally settling in Evanston in the early 1970s. Much later in life, Janie married one more time. Janie's union with James Johnson, gave her another daughter, Bernadette.

Before health issues forced her into disability, Janie worked as a housekeeper, babysitter, and factory worker. Janie found peace, strength, and comfort in her unrelenting faith. One of her favorite Bible verse was Psalm 91. Over the years, Janie attended few different churches before joining Wheaton Christian Center where she taught Sunday School for 25 years. Due to the long distance and her declining health, Janie became content with attending Wheaton's Sunday services via TV or streaming.

She also attended First Church of God Christian Life Center (Pastor Monte Dillard) when her daughter Julia was a member. Most recently, Janie joined Insight Church (Pastor James Ward) where Julia is also a member.

Janie was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Michael, Lloyd, and Carl. And, most recently, her beloved son, Melvin "Melvo". Janie is survived by three sisters, Betty, Linda, and Martha, and one brother, Floyd (Lloyd's Twin) — all of Greenville, SC.

Janie leaves them to mourn along with her children, Pecola Edelen (Henry), Benny Dorsey (Glenda), Jeffrey Dorsey, Sr. (Scherie), Sharlene; and Julia Jackson, Bernadett Chatman (Aaron); 14 grandchildren: Angela and Charles Edelen, Shaquis Hill, Demi Gibbs, Kiana Knight, John, Jalisa and Jeffrey (Jr.)

Jackson-Hatchett (Julian), Jacob Blake, Megan Belcher (Alton), Justin, Jasmin and Jamal Johnson, twenty-eight great-grandchildren and a plethora of nephews, pieces, family and friends. Please keep the family in your prayers.
