Mrs. Joyce Childress Obituary

Joyce Ann Childress was born on November 29, 1947 to George and Kathryn Latimore in Evanston, Illinois. She attended the Evanston school system and was a member of the class of 1966 at Evanston Township High School. She united in marriage with her high school sweetheart, Joe Childress on December 8, 1967. To this union three children were added: Anthony, Nicole, and Joel. Affectionately known as Joyce Ann or Joycie, she had a deep love for her Latimore family.

A faithful and devoted member of the Second Baptist Church of Evanston since 1978, she loved to sing and was known for her gifted and joyful singing. Joyce was active in the church choirs, Worship and Theater Arts Ministry, and community activities. She worked .at the Evanston Post Office before she worked at the United States Army Corps of Engineers at Ft. Sheridan, Illinois and the Glenview Naval Air Base and Forest City Enterprises who took over the Glenview base. At the time of her passing, she was a dedicated school crossing guard for the Wilmette Police Department.

Joyce was known for her smile and zeal that she put into whatever she did. A talented actress, she was in a number of plays in the Evanston and Chicago area community theaters. She also wrote a play. An avid Chicago Bulls fan, she was a season ticket holder for several years and loved her Bulls. A good friend, Joyce would give you anything if you needed it. She also loved her dogs, fish, travelling and tending to her vegetable garden.

Her parents and husband preceded her in death. Mourning her passing and celebrating her life are her children: Anthony (Jahadi) Childress, Joel Childress, and Nicole Childress (Bobby) Weatherspoon; grandchildren: Amir, Alia and Alyse Childress, Jovonni (Jabril Barnes) and Jazmine Childress, Joel Jr. and Lajanae Childress; Jahnari Grier who was like a grandson; great-grandchildren: Naiya, Tamia and Ahmad Barnes; sister, Teresa Kelly Logan; brother, George (Kimberly) Latimore; stepsister, Valerie Brooks; stepbrother, Ronald Kelly; brother-in-law, Alec (Gail) Childress; sisters-in-law, Theomia Haltom and Sandra Stringer; a slew of cousins (a few who thought they were her brother and sisters); nieces, nephews and a host of friends and extended family who will cherish many memories.Please keep the family in your prayers, obituary will be posted at a later time.
