Mary Teacora Avery-Wooden, affectionately known as Teacora was born April 8, 1935 in Simpsonville, (Greenville County) South Carolina, to the late Price and Julia Crout Avery. She was the 6th of seven children born to this union. She entered into eternal life on April 2, 2024, at 6:50 pm, from Dobson Plaza in Evanston, Illinois.
Teacora attended public schools in South Carolina. She moved to Atlanta and secured a baking job at Herren's Restaurant. Herren's was one of the first restaurants in Atlanta to serve blacks. She worked there until it closed in November 1987. Thereafter, she started an enriching career with the Georgia State Government as a cook in the cafeteria. She was well known for not only her kind disposition, but her famous biscuits. On December 10, 1998 she received a Certificate of Achievement for "Making the World's Best Biscuits," sold only in the state office cafeteria.
She attended St. Luke Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA and received Christ as her savior on January 7th, 1975. She was very proud of her relationship with Christ and had no problem testifying to what he brought her through. She loved attending service with her church family.
In 1983, she met and married Otis Wooden. He preceded her in death in September of 1997.
Teacora showed her love for God through the way she loved her family and friends. Lula Mae Burns, now deceased was her dearest friend for over 55 years, Even after her passing, Lula's children, Stanley, Herschell and Sandra Rena Burns looked after Teacora until she moved to Evanston, IL in 2020. She also held close to her heart friends Anne Williams, Sallie Mae Watts and Grace Johnson, all of Atlanta, GA. Those who knew Teacora described her as loyal, considerate, generous, humble and accepting. She was a true gem that will be sorely missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents Prince and Julia Crout Avery; her four brothers: Dial, Carol, Wornie and Walter Lee Avery; her two sisters: Bessie Brown and Christine Rush. She leaves to cherish her memory her two loving children: Sandra (Montell) Dozie and Eddie (Gloria) Avery; three grandchildren: Karma Dena Avery, Derrick Meeks, Chemiya Avery and a host of relatives and friends.Please keep the family in your prayers.
