Velma Mae Veasley-Coleman was born June 22,1931 to the union of Lovie C. "Jack" Veasley and Edna C. Weatherly-Veasley in Kosciusko, MS. She was loved by both parents but indeed a "Daddy's Girl". Velma passed away peacefully at age 90 on Thursday, December 9, 2021.
She ended Attala County schools in Kosciusko, MS. She accepted Christ at an early age. At the age of 17, she married Archie Coleman
and to this union two daughters where born, Linda Kate and Patsy Ann. In pursuit of a better life, they moved to Evanston, IL in 1960. She attended Friendship Baptist Church with her husband and later joined New Hope CME Church in Evanston, IL, where she served as President of the Interdenominational Missionary Board, Stewardess Board, and Class Leader.
Velma worked at Synchro Start as a wire solder for 28 years. After retirement, she continued to faithfully serve in her church in many capacities and she became an active member of the Levy Senior Recreational Center and Noyes Senior Citizen Club of Evanston. She was known for having her TV locked on Channel 2 to watch her daily soap operas, The Price is Right, and Judge Judy.
Velma was known as "Grandma" to many and she was the exceptionally strong and loving matriarch of her family. She had a very special way of connecting with people and she was loved and admired by many. She loved to share her faith in God and was known for sharing stories of her upbringing. She took great pride in her church and she also shared her love for cooking, gardening and sewing with others.
She was preceded in death by both parents: Lovie C. "Jack" Veasley and Edna C. Weatherly-Veasley, her husband Archie Coleman. all her siblings: Edna Chinn, Alvin "Brother" Veasley. Sarah Jean Chinn and Bettye Io Smith, Granddaughter LaShawn Billings. Great-grandson Preston Billings IV, and Great-great granddaughter Raina Brooke Wistafke.
Velma leaves to cherish her precious memories by her two daughters Linda Kate Short-Peterson (Oscer), Patsy Ann Coleman,
9 Grandchildren, 2 7 Great-grandchildren. 17 Great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews. cousins and friends.
