Veronica Gertrude Braithwaite was born on May 22, 1935, in Williamsfield, St. Catherine, Jamaica. She was the first child born to Addassa Jackson and
Leopold Byfield. Her mother later married Egbert Roberts and from that union came two siblings, Winston, and Pamela Roberts. In November 1969, Veronica migrated to the U.S. to live with her brother-in-law in Chicago, Illinois. Upon her arrival, with her can-do-attitude, she first found employment as a domestic helper. Shortly after, she was trained as a nurse's aide and retired as lead floor nurse's aide at Glencrest Nursing Home, Chicago. In May 1971, she returned to Jamaica to help her family migrate to the United States and live in Chicago, IL. In 1973, with prayers and guidance, she decided it prudent to relocate her family to the City of Evanston for a better life.
