Vincent Allen Ransom, an only child, was born on April 22, 1930, in Union Point, Georgia, to the union of Agean and Lena Mae (Allen) Ransom. Vincent relocated to Evanston when he was four years old. As he sojourned through Foster Elementary School and Evanston Township High School (ETHS), it was determined that he was born to sing, and he perfected his skillsets over the years. He was quite active, singing in the choir at ETHS, and demonstrated his athleticism in the 100- and 220-yard dashes. After high school graduation, Vincent matriculated at Illinois Wesleyan University, in Bloomington, Illinois. During his tenure at Wesleyan, he sang with the Martin Singers and was a member of the Quadrangular Track Club. Prior to completing his tenure at Wesleyan University, he was drafted in the U.S. Army, rendering his service in Germany and France, serving as the personnel clerk of his unit. However, as a staunch believer of self-improvement, over the years, Vincent attended classes at both Northwestern and Roosevelt Universities. A musical enthusiast, he was a member of the LeJuene Bishop Jones Fisher Male Choir. Vincent also acted in the Evanston Showcase Theater, where he participated in productions of stage, movies and television with actor Gene Lockhart and Evanston's Alferdine Pall.
In 1960, Vincent met the love of his life, Ms. Mary Austin, whom he married and shared 64 years of marital bliss. To that union, two daughters were born, Romey Elizabeth and Tasha Elana. After marriage to his beloved Mary, Vincent followed her from his church, Friendship Baptist Church of Evanston, to her home church, Second Baptist Church of Evanston, where he maintained his membership, leadership, and faithful service for the remainder of his life. During Vincents tenure at Second Baptist Church, he sang tenor in the Chancelor and Sanctuary Choirs. As well, he faithfully served for many years on Second Baptist Trustee Board, including leadership positions as financial secretary and treasurer. A resolute worker, Vincent was employed at Washington National Insurance Company, before joining the U.S. Postal service, where he served for many years and retired from in 1991. Always a loyal employee and industrious worker, after retiring from the Postal Service, Vincent worked for several years at the American Hotel Registry in Northbrook.
Vincent leaves to cherish his wife Mary, daughters Romy and Tasha, adopted daughter Gina, a host of loving extended family members, close friends: Winston Shelby, Dudley Brown, Wesley Poole, Mary Perrin, and many others, from Second Baptist Church and the extended Evanston community.
