Wesley Mims, Sr. Obituary

Wesley V. Mims was born on November 26, 1941 to Joseph and Viola Wideman Mims in Evanston, Illinois. He was the sixth of seven children. His parents and five siblings; Mildred, Phyllis, Oliver Joseph and Clyde, preceded him in death. Wesley was educated in the Evanston Public School system. He graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1960. In high school, Wesley was on the wrestling and football team. After graduation he attended Wright College in Chicago, Illinois prior to be drafted in the United States Armed Forces. Wesley was stationed at Ft. Wiley, Kansas in the 1st Infantry Division known as "The Big Red1." He served in the Vietnam War as a specialist E3. Wesley was honorably discharged in 1966 and received a Vietnam Services Medal.

Wesley returned to Evanston and worked for the Post Office from 1962 until his retirement in 1998. Wesley was united in holy matrimony to Hattie Scott in 1971. He was the proud father of three sons and one daughter. Wesley joined Second Baptist Church under the pastorate of Reverend C. Nathaniel Hawk as a child, Wesley liked to bowl, watch the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears. He loved to cook, especially barbeque which he was well known for.

Wesley leaves to cherish his memory Three Sons; Michael Edward Scott of Lafayette, AL, Timothy (Denise) Mims of Chicago, IL and Wesley Mims, Jr. of West Palm Beach, FL; One Daughter; Kimberly Byers of Dallas, TX; One Sister; Joan Glover of Evanston, Illinois; Sister-in-law's; Mary Ransom of Skokie, Illinois, Jaqueline Denise Scott of Lafayette, AL, Beatrice (Leon) Haith of Evanston, Illinois, Ella Scott of Canton, OH and Ann Judon of Tupelo, MS; Brother-in law: Andrew (Joann) Scott, Jr. of Opelika, AL; granddaughters Sherika (Lennon) Whitlow and Latasha Scott and grandson Antonio Scott all of Opelika, AL; great-grandson Zay Gopherin of Opelika, AL and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
